Body Scans
What you need to know
Body scans also known as CAT (Computerized Axial Tomography) scans are x-ray slices of different parts of the body like slicing a loaf of bread and looking at each cross section for abnormalities.
While we know that CAT scans do produce a much higher dose of radiation than conventional x-rays, in the right scenarios it is an invaluable tool in diagnosing certain diseases and helping to save lives. CAT scans are done at times with an i.v. in order to better visualize certain internal body parts. Individuals with allergies to contrast, iodine, shellfish should notify there physician and certain precautions as determined by your physician should be taken. In addition no caffeine should be taken the day of your test. Patient with any degree of kidney impairment may have worsening of there kidney function after a contrast injection and special precautions should be undertaken in these individuals as well. |
