Body Scans
What you need to know
Body scans, also known as CAT (Computerized Axial Tomography) scans, are x-ray slices of different parts of the body which allow us to look at each cross section for abnormalities.
While we know that CAT scans do produce a much higher dose of radiation than conventional x-rays; in the right scenarios, it is an invaluable tool in diagnosing certain diseases and helping save lives. CAT scans frequently are done with an IV in order to better visualize certain internal body parts. Individuals with allergies to contrast, iodine, shellfish should notify their physician and take the necessary precautions determined by the physician. In addition, no caffeine should be taken on the day of the test. Patients with any degree of kidney impairment may have deterioration of kidney functions. Hence, for these patients also, particular precautions should be undertaken. |
