Genetic Testing
Genes are segments of DNA. Genes are found in chromosomes and they control growth and help you stay healthy. When genes are abnormal or damaged, they may lead to disease. Genetic tests are tests of blood and other tissue conducted to find these genetic disorders.
Why It Is Done?
Genetic tests can be used for several reasons such as below:
- Finding possible genetic diseases in unborn babies
- Finding out if people carry a gene for a disease and might pass it on to their children
- Testing for genetic diseases in adults before they cause symptoms
- Confirming a diagnosis in a person who has disease symptoms
How It Is Done?
Genetic tests are performed on a sample of blood, hair, skin, amniotic fluid (the fluid that surrounds a fetus during pregnancy), or other tissue. The sample is sent to a laboratory where technicians look for specific changes in chromosomes, DNA, or proteins, depending on the suspected disorder.
Who is a candidate for genetic testing?
By analyzing your family history, your doctor can tell if you're likely to have a gene mutation that may contribute to disease.
- People from certain ethnic groups may also be more likely to get certain diseases.
- If one of your family members already has the disease, that person should be tested first.
- Women who have had two or more miscarriages.
- Women who are pregnant and over the age of 34.
More About Genetic Testing
There are very small physical risks associated with most genetic tests, particularly for those that require only a blood sample or buccal smear. However, many of the risks associated with genetic testing involve the emotional, or social consequences of the test results. People may feel angry, depressed, anxious, or guilty about their results.
Genetic testing can provide only limited information about an inherited condition. The test often can’t determine if a person will show symptoms of a disorder, how severe the symptoms will be, or whether the disorder will progress over time. Another major limitation is the lack of treatment strategies for many genetic disorders once they are diagnosed.
