Preventive Medicine

Gain Total Confidence in Your Health with Preventive Health Screenings

New technological advancements in health screenings allow physicians to detect disease in it's earliest stages. At EliteHealth MD®, we practice a different kind of medicine: Preventive Medicine. We are constantly researching, testing and installing the latest diagnostic testing equipment so that our members can live a longer and healthier life.

Our preventive healthcare focuses on overall wellness through preventative health care - making your concierge medical experience even better. Here are some of the most common health screenings that we offer:

Heart Scans: Calcium Score Testing and Cardiac CTA

Calcium Score Testing
Calcium Score Testing is crucial for early detection of heart disease and its severity. The coronary arteries – which do not normally contain calcium - supply blood to the heart. Calcium in the coronary arteries is a sign of coronary artery disease (CAD), and EliteHealth MD® finds that 50 percent of patients prescribed a heart scan show moderate or high calcium scores.

Calcium and plaque in the arteries leads to obstruction, causing heart attack and stroke.  A regular Calcium Score – which consists of a CAT scan of the heart and arteries – is endorsed by the American Heart Association and actually predicts the occurrence of heart attack and stroke.

Cardiac CTA (CT Angiogram)
A Cardiac CTA is a heart scan that provides a more advanced and detailed image of the extent and location of many types of blockages in the vessels.  The test, a CAT scan performed with IV contrast, forms a computerized 3-D image of the heart so detailed it was once thought only possible through more invasive testing like angiography or cardiac catheterization.

1 out of every 6 deaths per year is due to cardiovascular disease – and having heart scans can effectively predict the occurrence of cardiac events.  A Cardiac CTA is not only less invasive than cardiac catheterization; it uses 50 percent less IV contrast.

Exercise Stress Test

An Exercise Stress Test detects Ischemic Heart Disease – the decreased flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart.  Usually caused by narrowed arteries due to plaque buildup, ischemic heart disease ultimately leads to a heart attack – and many Americans don’t even know that they have the disease.

According to the American Heart Association, “As many as 3 to 4 million Americans may have ischemic episodes without knowing it. These people have ischemia without pain — silent ischemia. They may have a heart attack with no prior warning.”  The Exercise Stress Test is extremely accurate and a smart way to determine one’s risk for coronary artery disease.

Echocardiogram Stress Test

Also called the Treadmill Stress Test, an echocardiogram provides a clear picture of the heart’s ability to pump blood – and may show results that would not appear on other stress tests.

During the test, the heart is scanned with an ultrasound at a resting heart rate, and then again after strenuous exercise.  A stress echo can accurately visualize the motion of the heart's walls and pumping action when the heart is stressed; it may reveal a lack of blood flow not always apparent on other heart tests.

Nuclear Stress Test (Thallium)

A nuclear stress test measures blood flow to your heart muscle at rest and during stress. It is performed similarly to a routine exercise stress test, but provides additional images and information not available from an electrocardiogram.

Your physician will inject a radioactive isotope called thallium into your bloodstream.  As the thallium travels through the bloodstream, doctors can use a sensitive scanner to create images of the heart muscle and detect areas of decreased function.  The Nuclear stress test provides much more specific detail than the Echocardiogram stress test, and it allows doctors to detect 20 percent more cases of heart disease than with exercise testing alone.

Carotid IMT (CIMT)

CIMT (Carotid Intima Media Thickness) testing detects the presence or absence of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, as well as heart disease. The test is also commonly known as Vascular Age Testing.

CMIT is a safe, painless and noninvasive test, performed with a high-resolution ultrasound transducer. The sonographer measures the combined thicknesses of the intimal and medial layers of the carotid artery walls within twenty minutes – and doctors can then use this CIMT measurement to calculate the patient’s likelihood of developing heart disease.

Artery thickness can be reversed with lifestyle modification and treatment plans – 75 percent of EliteHealth MD® patients effectively decrease their CIMT scores through treatment plans prescribed by their doctors.  As over half of Americans who die of sudden cardiac arrest had no prior symptoms of heart disease, it’s essential to have regular heart testing to maintain good health.

Berkeley HeartLab

Berkeley HeartLabs is a trusted medical laboratory which analyzes patient blood samples to help prevent heart disease.  A Berkeley HeartLabs test analyzes genetics, cholesterol, and cardiovascular risk markers to help determine a patient’s actual risk of heart disease.

Over half of people who develop heart disease have cholesterol levels similar to those of individuals who do not develop the disease, and by analyzing the actual cholesterol molecules your EliteHealth MD® doctor will be better prepared to evaluate your coronary health.  The Berkeley HeartLab test measures factors such as the size of cholesterol particles and discriminating increments in lipoproteins – accurately and with extreme precision.. This allows for the monitoring of changes in a patient's risk over time, giving clinicians insight to adjust treatment plans accordingly.

If you have a history of two or more of the following conditions, consider booking a Berkeley HeartLab test at EliteHealth MD®.

  • Heart attack or heart disease
  • Family history of heart attack or heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • High LDL or low HDL cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • Smoking

Colonoscopy and Virtual Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy provides an inside look at your large intestine – and is an invaluable way to both detect and prevent colon cancer.  Having a colonoscopy can reduce the average person’s risk of developing colon cancer by 90 percent – and if all Americans were screened regularly, it would save 25,000 lives per year.
EliteHealth MD® offers two types of colonoscopies.

  • Optical Colonoscopy.  Performed using a flexible tube to examine the inner lining of the large intestine and colon, an optical colonoscopy helps detect ulcers, colon polyps, tumors, and areas of inflammation or bleeding. It allows doctors to collect samples, perform biopsies, and remove precancerous growths (or “polyps”); this means that a colonoscopy can actually help prevent cancer.
  • Virtual Colonoscopy.  Your doctor will use CT technology to create a detailed, three-dimensional image of your colon and detect abnormalities such as polyps (though they cannot be removed during the test).  This test reliably detects at least 92 percent of polyps and is more cost-effective, less invasive, and less embarrassing.

The American College of Gastroenterology recommends having an optical colonoscopy every ten years (or a virtual colonoscopy every five years) beginning at age 50 – and as individuals of African-American descent are at a higher risk of colon cancer, they should begin screenings at age 45.  Screenings should begin even younger and more often if a first-degree relative has been diagnosed with colon cancer.

Body Scan

A body scan, also known as a CAT (Computerized Axial Tomography) scan, is a three-dimensional x-ray scan that allows doctors to inspect cross-sections of the body for diseases and abnormalities. Completed in a matter of minutes, a body scan combines diagnostic tests like the coronary calcium score, mammogram, lung CT, and colonography into one comprehensive scan.

The scan combines a number of screen tests specific to the patients needs, such as a lung screening if the patient is a smoker or a colonography if the patient is over 50.  Patients with multiple risk factors for heart disease and cancer will especially benefit from a full body scan.  Early diagnosis of these conditions increases the patient’s chances of recovery.

Lung Scan

A lung scan is a test where a CAT scan image of the lungs is taken. This scan can help identify lung cancer and other lung diseases. In most cases this test is recommended to smokers or patients showing signs of lung disease.

Pulmonary Function Test

Pulmonary Function Testing has been a major factor in assessing the functional status of the lungs as it measures how well lungs take in and release air and move oxygen into the blood. This testing is conducted to diagnose certain types of lung disease such as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema, or to find the cause of shortness of breath. During the test, the patient places a clip over the nose and breathes through the mouth into a tube connected to a machine known as a spirometer to help the doctor measure the lung function.

Electrocardiogram (EKG)

The electrocardiogram is a diagnostic tool that measures and records the electrical activity of the heart in delicate detail. Interpretation of these details allows diagnosis of a wide range of heart conditions. These conditions can vary from minor to life threatening. It is important to be relaxed and relatively warm during the test as any movement, including muscle tremors such as shivering, can alter the results.

Abdominal Aortic Ultrasound

An abdominal aortic ultrasound test is a very useful screening procedure that measures the abdominal aorta, a major artery in your abdomen. It is a non-invasive, painless test that uses high-frequency sound waves to image the "aorta," the main blood vessel leading away from the heart. The test is conducted while you lay on an exam table.

Bone Density Test (women)

A bone density test, also called densitometry can determine if you have osteoporosis or if you are at risk of osteoporosis before you break any bones. A bone density test uses special X-rays to measure how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone.

Prostate Exam (men)

A prostate or a rectal examination is an internal examination of the rectum by a physician or other healthcare professional. During a prostate exam, the doctor will feel the prostate with gloved, lubricated fingers. A normal prostate usually feels firm. The doctor will check for hard spots, bumps or any other abnormalities on the prostate.

Chest X-Ray

Heart scans use x-rays to do detailed images of internal body structures and in this case the arteries of your heart. In addition it can look at the heart itself to see if there are any abnormalities of the muscle, the valves or the outer lining of the heart. It is a noninvasive approach that may save lives.
